The historians' history of the world; a comprehensive narrative of the rise and development of nations as recorded by over two thousand of the great writers of all ages: . nly a little more variedthan the sober record of the life ofthe novelist and playwright story of Pocahontas has been a chess-board of critical ingenuityand exercise. People who know nothing else of colonial history know thestory of how Pocahontas rescued Smith by laying her pretty head upon hisas the clubs of the executioners were about to descend. It is among themost fascinating jjictures in history or fiction. It was not till 1860 that anyhistorian ever hinted at an inaccuracy in the story. In that year CharlesDeane? In his lateraccount, the General Historie of 1624, he says that on his return from cap-tivity he found out the conspirators against him and he quietly tooke suchorder with such lawyers, that he layd them by the heeles till he sent some ofthem prisoners for England. It is impossible here to go into the arguments pro and con the Pocahontasstory. The arguments against its credibility are numerou
