Being- defeated in -a skirmishwith the Naib of Patna, he came back to Mursheda-bad and killed Hossein Kuli Khan, the favoriteassistant of Nowazesh Mahomed Khan, the husbandof Ghasiti Begum, as also his blind brother. The valiant MeerJafiFer Khan was dismissed and Meer Khadem ap-pointed in his place. Mohan Lai was promoted to beprime minister. These supercessions caused greatmortification to Meer Jaffer and Rajah receiving intimation of Drakes refusal to breakdown certain fortifications that were in progress atCalcutta, Serajuddowla attacked the English forti-fication at Cossimbazar and imprisoned all the Englishofficers. He then attacked Calcutta and Fort Williamsurrendered. The Black Hole tragedy was then enac-ted. The verdict of modern historians has exculpatedSerajuddowla from his being an active accomplice ofthis wholesale murder. Four of the survivors of thatnight to horror, that added its gloom to the sufferingsof the victims, one of whom was Holwell, were sentup by boat to Murshidabad. On
