An industrialrailway connects both of these shops with the shop storeroom, which is a three-story slow-burning building located near of the principal tools in the shop and the intervening aislesare served with an equipment of Yale & Towne overheadtrolley hoists provided with turntable junctions. A generalview of the armature room is shown on page 566. Some ofthe more important tools in this room and their uses are asfollows : Hydraulic press for shaft and pinion work. The pump onthis press is electrically driven, or, if desired, may be operatedby hand. The latter method is used for the more delicatework, as in placing commutators. It is the practice to presson 2T/2-in. pinions at 10 tons and 2a-in. pinions at 15 tons. The banding machine in this shop is similar in design tothose used by one of the motor manufacturers, ft is con-. The commutator grooving machine has a l*4-in. saw drivenby a ;/2-hp motor. Beneath the saw is an adjustable horse forsupporting armatures in the grooving position. The motor andsaw are mounted on a carriage which may be moved backwardand forward on a guide plate by a lever controlled by theoperator. A small air nozzle keeps the dust away from theoperator. The lathe equipment of the armature shop includes one one 26-in. lathe, each with a 3T/2-hp motor. A Whitneymilling machine driven by a 2-hp motor is used for generalwork and for cutting commutator segments and milling com-mutator fingers so that arcing pieces may be inserted. Contactfingers for controllers and circuit breakers are finished fromcopper castings made in the shop foundry. Thirty-three men are employed in the armatu
