It was not until after the appearance of theMerrimac at Hampton Roads and the danger to Footes fleet on the jMississii)pi from Confederate rams thatEllet was given the opportunity to try his various projects and commissioned to equip several rams atCincinnati. The project was regarded as a perilous one.
