'Constantinopeldes…'. Constantinople/Istanbul view by Sebastian MUNSTER 1574 map
'Constantinopeldes Griechischen keyserthumbs Hauptstatt, im Landt Thracia am meere gelegen [Constantinople, capital of the Greek Empire, situated on the sea in the land of Thrace]'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Sebastian Münster. Provenance: From "Cosmographia Universalis" by Sebastian Munster, published by Henri Petri, Basel. Type: Antique sixteenth century woodblock bird's eye view /map, uncoloured. A woodcut birdseye perspective view of the walled city of Constantinople (present-day Istanbul, Turkey) by Sebastian Münster; one of the earliest published views of the city. From a German edition of Cosmographia. The Topkapi palace and Hagia Sofia can be seen in the forground (the Blue Mosque had not been constructed at the date of publication), with the Golden Horn right of centre and Galata on the right hand side. There are many sailing ships in the harbor. The title describes it as the "capital of the Greeks", although the city had fallen to the Ottoman Empire over a hundred years earlier. German text verso.
