IVF. Conceptual computer artwork representing in vitro fertilisation (IVF), showing a human egg cell (ova, brown) being fertilised by a sperm cell (green) in a test tube. IVF is a fertility treatment in which egg cells are fertilised outside the body. They may either be introduced to the sperm or have individual sperm cells injected into them. Eggs that are fertilised and begin to develop into embryos are then implanted into the mother's uterus and a normal pregnancy can follow. This treatment has helped many couples who would otherwise not be able to have children.
