A treatise on the diseases of the nervous system . mes of all the senses, post - mortem examinations re-vealed the existence of some kindof lesion of the optic thalami. It generally happens that anextravasation, originating in ei-ther the corpus striatum or op-tic thalamus, involves both theseganglia. Hence we have, as themost common symptoms of haem-orrhage into these organs, loss orimpairment of the power of mo-tion, disturbance of sensibility, dilatation or irregular movementsof the pupil, aberrations of visionand hearing, etc. As we have seen, a lesion ofthe corpus striatum and opticthalamus

As we have seen, a lesion ofthe corpus striatum and opticthalamus of one side producesloss of the power of motion andof sensibility in the opposite sideof the body. The manner inwhich this is accomplished will bereadily understood from an in-spection of the accompanyingdiagram (Fig. 13), in which a in-dicates the left opto-striated body, b the left half of the pons Varoliiand medulla oblongata, c the left lateral half of the spinal cord, d asensory nerve-fibre decussating soon after its entrance into the cord,. 1 Op. et loc. Theorie physiologique de lhallucination. Paris, 1874. 114 DISEASES OF THE BRAIN. e a motor nerve-fibre decussating at the lower boundary of the medullaoblongata. A lesion existing at f will therefore cause paralysis ofmotion and of sensibility at g, on the right side of the body. When the extravasation beginning in the left optic thalamus orcorpus striatum extends to the fissure of Sylvius so as to involve theposterior part of the third frontal convolution, the island of Reil, orother part supplied by the middle cerebral artery, or when it originatesin this region, aberrations of speech occur. These are independent ofparalysis of the tongue, and are such as are embraced under the termaphasia. This subject will be hereafter more fully considered. If the lesion be limited to the anterior two-thirds of the internalcapsule, there will be merely paralysis of motion, although there maybe, as I have lately had occasion to
