His paternal grandfather,William Hague, was a noted Baptist preacher atScarborough, in Yorkshire, whose son James, a sea-captain, settled in this country, having married AnneBayley, of Pelham, a granddaughter of Joseph Pell,who was known as the fourth lord of Pelham Manor,and descended from a longline of distinguished men, con-spicuous among whom was theHon. and Rev. John Pell,1610-85, a very celebratedmathematician and OliverCromwells resident ambassa-dor in Switzerland, Hague was graduat-ed from Hamilton in 1836. Hestudied the following year atPrinceton theological semi-nary, and two years thereafterat the Newton theological in-stitution, where he was gradu-ated in 1839.
