IRCAD cancer building ceremony, Taiwan. Ceremony to mark the ground-breaking (digging of the foundations) for the ASIA-IRCAD building in Taiwan. ASIA-IRCAD is the Asian equivalent of IRCAD (Institut de Recherche sur les Cancers de l'Appareil Digestif), the French research institute for digestive system cancers. ASIA-IRCAD is also the Asian Institute of Telesurgery (AITS). Both IRCAD centres use advanced scanning techniques to diagnose digestive system cancers. They then use advanced robotic laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery of the abdomen) to treat the cancers. Building of the IRCAD-AITS Taiwan centre started in 2006, and the centre was scheduled to open in May 2008.
