Record magnetic tape storage cartridge. IBM researcher Dr Mark Lantz displaying a tape cartridge using a prototype sputtered magnetic tape storage medium that achieved a world record for storage capacity in 2016. This record (201 gigabits per square inch) was achieved on a medium developed by Sony Storage Media Solutions. The capacity is 20 times that found in commercial tape cartridges, with the potential to record some 330 terabytes (TB) of uncompressed data on the single tape cartridge shown here. Photographed on 29 August 2017.
