07/06/16 ***With Video: **** The sails are finally turning again on Britain's only working six-sailed stone windmill, in Heage near Belper, Derbyshire after a huge crane hoisted them into position yesterday. The six sails were removed in November 2015 to allow restoration work to be carried out over winter, after wet rot was discovered in the beams supporting the sails at Heage Windmill last summer. As well as replacing the supporting beams that stretch as far as the mill's fantail, the sails and windmill ‘cap’ have also been restored and painted by a team of volunteers. The cost of around £80,000 to carry out the essential repairs has been donated by local businesses and through the efforts of numerous fund-raising initiatives by the volunteer team. The windmill first ran in 1797 and continued to mill commercially until it was struck by lightning in 1919. It still produces small batches of wholemeal flour, stoneground from British wheat harvested in a traditional way, in a natural environment free from synthetic fertilisers and pesticides.
