He was liberally educated andstudied law, but soon abandoned that profession, and enteredthe anny in 1753. His mathematical ability was shown byhis publishing a treatise on the integral calculus. When hewent to London, two years later, as secretary to the Frenchembassy, his scientific attainments caused him to be chosen amember of the Royal Society.
