Drake was born at Scotch Plains, Essex Coun-ty, August-24, 1821, received a public school education, andat the age of sixteen became a clerk in a grocery store inhis native town, later accepting a similar position in New-ark. About the time he attained his majority he returnedto Scotch Plains and was engaged for a time in the opera-tion of his fathers mill. Smalley, daugh-ter of Mahlon Smalley, of Somerset (ounty. Their chil-dren are George D., Mahlon S., Nathaniel, Augusta, andHarriet C. (wife of Irving T?. Harrison, of Irvington). Jlahlon S.
