An old engraving of a Victorian portable toilet or commode. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The toilet was designed as a cabinet, a piece of wooden furniture that would blend in to a bedroom setting of the time. This toilet had a flushing mechanism. Closing the lid activated a pump (right) that would flush and empty the toilet bowl into the bottom chamber. Those that could not afford this kind of device for their night-time requirements would often use a chamber pot that would be kept beneath the bed.
