In the reduction of subspinous dislocations, after the armhas been abducted, it should be rotated inward and directpressure made upon the head of the bone as the arm isabducted. Fig. Kochers method of reduction: first position. (Brewer.) Reduction may also be effected by extension and counter-extension, as in Coopers method, where extension is madefrom the arm downward and counter-extension is made bythe heel in the axilla (Fig. 314). This method is not tobe recommended, on account of the damage which mayoccur to the axillary nerves and vessels. DISLOCATIONS OF THE SHOULDER. 429 Kochers Method.—Place the patient in the sitting postureand flex the elbow to a right angle, at the same time pres-sing the arm against the chest; the flexed forearm isthen turned as far as possible from the trunk by rotatingthe humerus outward until it occupies a position parallelwith the transverse plane of the body (Fig. 315). W bile theexternal rotation is being maintained the elbow is slowlycarried upward along the anterior border of the chest Fig. 316.
