If we examine what takes place we see that the current of fresh air can circulate without difficulty, and in this manner the total mass can be kept at any temperature that may be required. During very cold weather it is advisable to close these openings, as we have just mentioned the fact that water was at times placed in the gutters, the object of which is to make sure of a circulation of air, for as it flows from the opposite side a certain volume is carried along.
