The Peter Kirk, Duffus
St Peter's Kirk stands south of the road leading to Gordonstoun School about a quarter of a mile east of the village of Duffus. It is sometimes referred to as St Peter's Church; as Duffus Old Parish Church; as Duffus Old Kirk; or just as Peter Kirk. The ‘Church of the Blessed Peter at Duffus’ is first mentioned in a charter from 1190 The church was probably built by Freskin de Moray, who also constructed the mighty Duffus Castle nearby. The church was badly damaged in the early 1300s during the Wars of Independence. It is situated in an situated in an idyllic location off the road to Gordonstoun School, among mature trees. A rare medieval ‘mercat’ cross survives among the grave stones.
