Head twice as long as broad ; profile of snout descending in a strong curve ; snout as long as or a little longer than eye, which is 3|- to 4 times in length of head and equals interorbital width ; mouth ex- tending to below nostril; 12 to 16 large conical teeth in each jaw; cheek naked. Gill-rakers very short and few. Dorsal XXl-XXII 8 ; Fig. 2'elmatochromis vittatus. Type (Tr. Z. S. 1898). §. spines increasing in length to the last, which measures h length of head and a little less than longest soft rays. Anal VII 5-6 ; last spine as long as last dorsal. Pectoral f length of head. Ventral produced into a short filament, reaching origin of anal. Caudal rounded. Caudal pe- duncle as long as deep. Scales 45-52 jg; lateral lines jgzjg. Yellowish ; a dark brown lateral band from the upper lip, through the eye, to the base of the caudal where it ends in a round spot; a second band commences on the vertex and extends along the base of the dorsal; a few dark brown spots on the dorsal; anal edged with dark brown; a vertical black bar at the base of the pectoral.
