The Phoneix Tower, a medieval structure, within Chester City Walls.

The inscription on the tower states: "King Charles stood on this Tower September 24th 1645 and saw his army defeated on Rowton Moor" Also known as the Newton Tower. More notably as the King Charles Tower, commemorating the happenings of September 1645 during the English Civil War, when Charles 1, stood with the mayor, (Sir Francis Gamul) on the roof, to witness the defeat of his army by Parlimentary forces, after the battle on Rowton Moor. The above battle marked the end of King Charle's military career and he became a fugitive. He fled from Chester after spending the night at Gamul House, the home of the mayor, this house is still in existence today in the form of a pizza restaurant. Three years later the King was beheaded in London as a traitor.
