TheGovernor was one of the veterans who, during tlie close of the lastcentury and the beginning of this, had upheld the lienor of oldEngland on the ocean, lie liad served under Nelson, and had lostan eye at the battle of the Nile, where he greatly distinguishediiraself. Disagreements took place among the colonists aboutthe site for the capital, a section of them advocating EncounterBay. A meeting of the purchasers of land was called to considerthis matter, early in 1837, when an overwhelming majority decidedin favor of Colonel Lights choice, and that question was settledfor ever. Through this dispute, and afterwards through want of horsesor other animal power to shift the survey parties and carry theirprovisions, the surveys were much delayed, and hence arose greatdissatisfaction ; Mr. Kingston returned to England, and submittedto the Commissioners a plan for a more rapid survey on a differentsystem from that on which Colonel Light was proceeding.
