This is howit came about. In 1889 Mr. Soares,the Brazilian Railway King, was able from the Rio Grande portion, astheir early history is tied up to-gether. In 1890 the Chemins de FerSecondares, a powerful Belgianrailways and tramways syndicate,formed a special company: theChemin de Fer Sud Ouest Bresi-lien, to whom Mr. Soares handed. VIEW ON THE CAXIAS RAILWAY, THE OLD AND THE NEW granted a line from Itarare, on thefrontier of the State of Sao Paulo,into the Rio Grande, through PontoGrossa, Passo Fundo and CruzAlta to Santa Maria, besides twobranches, one in the State of Paranaand the other from Cruz Alta toIjuhy and the mouth of the RioCamandahy, 183 miles in is the railway that eventuallybecame the Sao Paulo & Rio GrandeRailway in the States of Parana andSanta Catharina, which we havealready examined. But it is insepar- over his lease, together with the 6per cent., thirty years guarantee(the milreis at 2yd.) and a fine beltof forest land on either side. The portion north of Cruz Alta,including both branches, was handedover to the Industrial Union of theUnited States of Brazil in 1893,who, in turn, transferred it to theSao Paulo & Rio Grande Railway. The southern portion, which it hadkept—some 100 miles long, betweenSanta Maria and Cruz Alta—wasopened to traffic in 1894. The
