E. section, with the following chemical composition specified: car-bon, to per cent; manganese, to percent; silicon, to per cent; phosphorus, not morethan per cent. To this composition is added cent metallic titanium. Previous to making use of the titanium element, theBoston Elevated Railway considered it advisable to re-quire a 20 per cent discard in order to insure soundrails for its service. Since making use of the titaniumelement, the company has accepted the standard discardof 9 per cent. Rails are furnished in 33-ft. lengths, and the droptest required is a fall of 15 ft. by a 2000-lb. tup on atest rail not more than 6 ft. long, placed head upward. CURVE ON RAPID TRANSIT LINE, BOSTON ELEVATED RAIL-WAY, AT HAVERHILL AND CAUSEWAY STREETS on supports 3 ft. apart. About 4101 tons of ferro-titanium rail have been purchased for the rapid transitlines in the past four years. Ferro-titanium rails are used on both tangent andcurved track on the rapid transit system but not forguard or contact rails. Since the opening of the ele-vated service at Boston, in 1901, special study has beengiven to rail wear on account of the severity of steel rails are still in service on certaincurves where the life of ordinary commercial rail wasformerly less than two months. Manganese steel is alsoused for frogs, crossings and other special work, andboth cast and rolled manganese steel rails are used inmain line special work. The comparative first cost of 85-lb. A. S. C. E. railsper foot as lately purchased by the company is: Open-hearth untreated, cents. Open-hearth ferro-titanium, 43 cents. Frictionless
