London Underground engineer checks the alignment of a section of renewed track in a tunnel following essential maintenance.

The regular maintenance of the London Underground rail network (which carries around a billion passengers a year) is a complex and difficult procedure. The tube is so essential that it cannot be closed (except for the most urgent repairs) because of the disruption and delays this would cause to passengers. Most maintenance must be carried out at night during the short ‘engineering hours’ (0100 – 0430am) when the trains stop running and this can severely limit how much work is possible.
