Yale, Merrit A.; Yale, THK IIICHV HOLSE The story uf .larmi lUtrrs liiicoiiiilcr ti//// the Pcacoit One of the most conspicuous and interesting old liouses in the town isthe Higby House near the Second Congregational Church, it is a typicalold New England house and was built by Samuel Higby in 1787. at theclose of the Revolutionary War; he had served in Col. Wolcotts regi-ment. Higby was a deacon of what was then called the Second Churchand a tithing man. This story is told and verified by Mr. William Higby,now living:—On Sunday the tithing man was accustomed to take hisposition in the belfry of the church where he could watch the post roadto enforce the law in reference to Sunday traveling.
