Royal Astronomical Society gold medal. This is the front of the medal, which is decorated with William Herschel's 40-foot telescope. Herschel (1738-1822) was one of the founders of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS). This is the medal that was awarded to William Frederick Denning (1848-1931) in 1898. Denning discovered four comets and a nova. The gold medal is the highest award of the RAS and was first presented in 1824. Two medals are awarded every year. One for achievement in astronomy and one for achievement in geophysics. For an image showing the reverse of the medal see V700/276.
