HAMILTON, Jr. Among the young Republicans who have become prominent in the politicsof Illinois is the subject of this sketch. He is the son of John L. Hamilton, farmer, who was born in Ireland in 1829. In 1851 he came to Jersey County,111., where he first worked on a farm as a laborer. In four years he succeededin earning enough to purchase one hundred and sixty acres of land in MasonCounty, which a little later he sold, and with the proceeds purchased a consid-erable tract in Macoupin County. In 1864 he sold this and moved to IroquoisCounty, where he became well known, serving in the capacity of School Directorand Supervisor for several years. In 1875 he was nominated by the Repub-licans for County Treasurer, and was successfully elected by about three hundredmajority, notwithstanding that the County was Democratic.
