He was defeatedat the election by Judge Robert E. LTmbelby the narrow margin of thirty-two votes. Judge Ewing has been a very active factorin the substantial improvement of the countyseat. Through his enterprise and untiring-effort Fayette county now possesses a mag-nificent court-house and a commodious andadmirably arranged jail. He was one of the builders and ownersof the liandsome law building known as theBlackstone, and was a liberal contributortoward the erection of the First Presbyterianchurch. He has been identified closely withevery movement that has had for its objectthe advancement of this community. Hewas most active in the establishment of the. Heis a stockholder of the Fayette Gas FuelCompany, and United Light Company, presi-dent of the National Bank of Fayette county;was projector and principal stockholder ofHygeia Crystal Ice «Sz; Cold Storage Corn-pan}, and was a stockholder of the Union-town Street Railway Company. He marriedOctober 22, 1878, Miss Sallie, step-daugh-ter of Judge William Mitchell of the supremebench of Minnesota. Mrs. Ewing died in1882, leaving one son, William Kenned
