The critics praisedthe work, and said the audience was ravished by the beauty of themusic. Schumann influenced the French as well as the Russian com-posers. The English were faithful to Mendelssohn, and their com-posers have not yet wholly escaped from slavish imitation of the leastpraiseworthy characteristic
