Karl Barry Sharpless, US chemist, illustration

Illustration of the US chemist Karl Barry Sharpless (born 1941). Sharpless's work on chiral catalysis and click chemistry lead to him being awarded shares of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry twice, first in 2001 and then again in 2022. He was only the fifth person to be awarded two Nobel Prizes. Chiral catalysts drive the production of one of the two possible forms of a chiral molecule (a molecule that cannot be superposed on its mirror image). This directed catalysis can be particularly important in the production of pharmaceuticals, where one form may be beneficial and the other harmful. In 2001 he coined the term 'click chemistry' to describe highly reliable, selective reactions for the synthesis of new compounds that produce no, or minimal, by-products.
