College Park airfield. Wings from the wreck of a Wright biplane being carried by US soldiers and others at College Park airfield, Maryland, USA. This airfield was founded in 1909 by the US Army Signal Corps as a training site for the Wright Model A biplane that had been leased from the Wright brothers. Wilbur Wright instructed army officers in how to fly the aircraft. In the background is a Rex Smith Aeroplane Company hanger. This aviation company was founded in 1910 and its hanger was moved in 1911 next to the Army Aviation School. Civilian aircraft began flying from here in December 1911. Photograph from 1911, from the Harris and Ewing collection.
