'The Descent from the Cross' (detail), c1520. A stooping Joseph of Arimathea holds Christ's crown of thorns. Gossaert (c1478-1532) is usually seen as the founder of the Romanist art movement, the first group of Flemish painters to be influenced by the Italian Renaissance.
