E/MJ : engineering and mining journal . ce after their having passedthrough waste-heat boilers. Each treater is fur-nished with an independent power plant. Six electri-cal units are being used for the main treater, oneunit being spare; and two are used for the reverbera- tory treater. Each electrical unit consists of thefollowing General Electric equipment: 50-cycle, single-phase, 200- to 100,000-volttransformer; one 200-volt, 50-cycle, single-phase alternator, driven by a 15-hp., .50-cycle, 500-volt, three-phase induction motor; and a disc-typerectifier, manufactured by the Kelman Electric coupled to the motor-generator shaft. Be-sides these machines, exciter sets for the excitationof the field of the alternators are furnished, two forthe main treater and two for the reverberatorytreater. The charging voltage is adjusted by regu-lating the intensity of the field current of the alter-nators. By this means, it is possible to producepractically any desired voltage from zero up to 100,-. THE NAOSHIMA TREATER, SHOWEsTG APPEARANCE OF SMOKE WITH CURRENT OFF. COMPARED WITH THE CONDITIONS WHEN THE COTTRELL PROCESS IS IN OPERATION 000 on the secondary terminals of the aveiage power consumed by the precipitator isabout 30 kw. The main treater consists of ten sections, eachcontiiining 64 riveted pipes, arranged in a square(or a total of 640 pipes), and the reverberatoryti-eater consists oT three similar ssctions (or a totalof 192 pipes). These pipes, 12 in. inside diameterand 16 ft. long, of No. 16 sheet steel, were manufac-tured by the Western Pipe & Steel Co. The gasesare drawn througli the main treater by two induceddraft fans, and are discharged directly from the fancasings. Those from the reverberatory furnace aredrawn through tlie reverberatory treater by thenatural draCt of the stack. As the reverberatoryfurnace is not operating continuously at present, theAshio smeltery uses eleven pot roasters, four blastfurnace
