One of these, published on the 10th of March,1782, on the occasion ofthe prejudiced character ofsome of his lives of the En-glish poets, represents thedoctor, in the shape of anowl, standing upon the Lives of the Poets andthe Dictionary, and leeringat Milton, Pope, &c., whoare surrounded with starrvrays. It is entitled, OldWisdom blinking at thestars. Johnson himself partook violently in those strongpolitical prejudices which were the bane of literatureat the commencement of the reign of George III., andwhich then were felt still more injuriously, becausethey even influenced the judgment of the critics inthose new tribunals, the reviews, who too often pu-nished the political creed of the writer by speakingbitterl
