On terrace pavilion with ribbed roof on R, Emperor stands behind large globe in stand with 1 hand on globe & 1 arm gesticulating in the air as astronomer points at globe with compass on R & 2 dignitaries converse & point towards globe on L; behind them, astronomer gazes through telescope; in front of balustrade on R, figure carries bound folio under his arm & interacts with young student seated on step of terrace who inscribes circles with compass on paper; near additional figure behind balustrade on far R holds back curtain; to L of terrace 1 figure bows & another kneels towards Emperor; stairway leading to temple on L; pagodas & additional buildings in distance (BRD) picture-frame border with stylized acanthus leaves Initially, famous commissions of this series took place with, notably, 1 set ordered by the duc du Maine & another by his brother the comte de Toulouse; subsequent anonymous commissions followed well into the 18th century. This panel is probably from 1 of these later commissions. The left end of the composition, with the temple on a hill, an astronomer standing at the foot of its steps & additional figures in foreground, is similar to that of GCPA 0241360 & 0241369, The Emperor on a Journey.
