Tongue papillae. Light micrograph of a vertical section through circumvallate papillae on a mammalian tongue. A full papilla is at right, with a partially seen one at left. The papilla upper layer is stratified epithelium (red). The troughs between the papillae are where tasting is done by the taste buds (oval, light pink). The taste buds are long receptor cells with microvilli at their tips. At the other end they are attached to sensory nerve cells. Magnification: x380 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
