General Butler was in con-tinuous service throughout the war, part of the time as Lieuten-ant-Colonel of Morgans famous rifle regiment. He distinguishedhimself at Saratoga and Monmouth, and led one of the two storm-ing parties at the taking of Stony Point, He was present withhis regiment in the operations on James River, and at the captureof Cornwallis. He was second in command under St. Clair in hisexpedition against the Indians in 1791, and was killed in the 3.
