There is one rule that the designer must FIG. 15. take up one and let lay one, in constantalternation. From the sixth to the eighthcourse, throw the shuttle straight repeat the design. Striped designs with ornamental edgesare illustrated byFigures Nos. 16 and24. The methodof proceeding is asfollows: Firstcourse, take up two,let lay one; thenthrow the shuttlestraight through tothe last six threads,of which take upone and let lay the secondcourse, take up one,let lay five, and thenthrow the shuttlestraight through tothe last six threads,of which let lay fiveand take up one. The third course is likethe first; after which follow three coursesstraight through. Then repeat the designfrom the beginning. In the illustrations, Figures Nos. 19 and25, there is shown a plain design withdiagonal stripes. It is brought out in this. alternating threads, is given in the illustra-tions Nos. 18 and 26. The method of pro-ceeding is as follows : • For the first course, -LIFTING THE REED AND PL.\CING THE FIRST INPOSITION. remember, and that is, that for the firstcourse of every design, while the reed isdepressed the shuttle must be thrown fromright to left, through the upper layer ofthreads; as in general, the courses fromright to left form the figure of the design,while in the course from left to right theshuttle is thrownstraight through theopen shed of threadscrossing each other. The weaver mustfurther observe that,in order to obtain aclean, smooth, evenselvedge, the firstand last thread ofeach course mustbe taken upwards,even at the risk ofproducing some lit-tle irregularity inthe design. We will now pro-ceed to give a de-tailed description ofthe method of pro ?ssssassst^s^, &m. ,|S^.;
