In the Ottawa dis-trict groves of bass woods, maples, and asperswere stripped of every vestige of foliage,as well as the underbrush, consisting ofnumerous kinds of shrubs. Although theForest Tent Caterpillar was slightly morenumerous, the American Tent Caterpillar(Fig. 49), it was noticed, occurred with it inalmost equal numbers, and, notwithstandingthat close search was made for parasites, in thisdistrict at any rate, few were found. A largenumber of egg clusters were collected to see if the young caterpillars contained in the egg were in a healthy condition. These werekept in a warm office, and by the 1st of January hundreds of young caterpillars hadhatched and were gathered together in a large mat-like cluster on the side of the jar. 84. Fig. 49. 62 Victoria. Sessional Papers (No. 23 ). A. 1899 There is no indication of the presence of either egg parasites or fungous disease, and asthe trees throughout this district bear enormous numbers of the egg clusters, the outlookis ominous ; special effort must be put forth by fruit growers and gardeners during the pre-sent winter and next spring, or there will oertainly be serious loss next season. The rem-edies which give the best results against these insects are (i.) the collection and burningof the egg cluster during the winter, (n ) the cutting off and burning of thenests of young caterpillars early in spring, when they may be easily detected bythe conspicuous white tents which they spin in the crotches of branches, and(in.) the spraying with Paris green of ah trees liable to be invaded in an infested sooner the application is made the more effective it will be, for many insects whichcan be controlled while young
