Red sunrise over the Alfred Basin, Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa

The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is the oldest part of Cape Town's harbour complex, restored in 1990 and transformed into a recreational area, with shopping centres, restaurants, coffee shops and bistros. The Waterfront is named after Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria, who, on a state visit to South Africa in 1860, tipped the first load of stone into the sea. The Victoria Basin, in the distance, was built after the Alfred Basin, in the foreground. The Waterfront faces east (the sun in July rising over the entrance), so a breakwater at the entrance can provide maximum protection from Atlantic storm winds. Table Bay and the harbour are subject to strong winds during the Cape winter.
