Early 1900's studio portrait postcard of two young women - General Post Office (GPO) postal workers / postwomen - helping deliver letters to aid the war effort on the home front, circa 1916
The introduction of men's conscription in 1916 made the need for female workers urgent and they were employed in many of the jobs traditionally done by men such as working for the post office as postwomen and telegram women had worked behind the counter in post offices, they did not deliver the mail before WW1. This dates the photo between 1916 -1918. In 1916 postwomen were issued with a blue straw hat, blue serge coat and skirt and boots. The GPO hat badge can be seen and the number on the lapel of the coats is the staff number. These women are staff 122 and 123 - perhaps they signed up together and were friends See Alamy reference 2B49WF3 for photo of a group of male post office workers from Brighton at the Front.
