Fig. 134 is a reproduction from a skiagraph of the hand of an8-year old child. Note the difference in the epiphyses of the firstand the other four metacarpal bones. One not familiar with theappearance of the epiphyses of the metacarpal and phalangeal bonesof the hand might mistake them for fractures. This is also true ofthe epiphyses of other bones during childhood and early adult life. X-RAY IN FRACTURES AND DISLOCATIONS 305 If space allowed, the author would like to show by means of skia-graphs the changes that take place in the joints each year frominfancy to 25 years. No time can be considered lost that is devotedto a careful study of the normal relation of the bones during theirgrowth and development. The bones of the hand are frequentlyinjured, which often results in ugly deformities. Reduction of. Fig. 135.—Fracture and slight displacement of the first phalangeal bone of the thumb. fractures and dislocations in the carpal and phalangeal bones areoften followed by bad functional results. It is often difficult tokeep the fragments in position after reduction has been accom-plished and the bandage applied. To make sure that the work hasbeen well done, careful skiagraphs should be made before and after 306 PRACTICAL ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS AND X-RAY THERAPY reduction in all hand injuries, and it will be surprising how manydressings will have to be removed and how many times the workbe done over. Fig. 135 illustrates this point better than any wordpicture. The skiagraph was made from the hand of a young ladywho had been devoting a great deal of her time to piano practice, and was very anxious that her injured thumb might be
