Thewest front has two towers, and a central portal with goodstatuary, and the side portals are simple and two towers are alike up to the belfry stage, wherethe northern one stops and is finished with a pyramidal The slated roof. The other was carried up in the 13th century, with a magnificent octagon lantern crowned with a spire, and with shafted tabernacles to fill out the angles of thesquare. This splendid steeple has been much praised, and has many beautiful parts, but it is not happilycomposed. The best aspect is that on the diagonal, asI have drawn it (Plate III). Seen in direct elevation itis painfully lean, and at a distance looks like a hugepinnacle, or a lighthouse, on a square base. The angle steeple ? . Plate III |1 I. i. <;. j. SENLIS
