Early French Submarine Gustave Zédé circa 1899

From an Illustration Cassell's Century Edition History of England, pub circa 1901. Gustave Zédé was launched on 1 July 1893 but only formally entered service with the French Navy in May 1900 after a long series of trials and alterations. The submarine is believed to have been the first equipped with a periscope & to have carried out the first successful torpedo attack by a submerged vessel against a surface ship.
