View WSW of the Holy Well of St Mylor in the churchyard at the head of Mylor Creek, Mylor Churchtown, Cornwall, England, UK. An Early Christian monastic site reputedly founded by St Meloir, an abbot-bishop from Brittany who was martyred here around AD 411. He is said to have raised a well out of a rock & the presence of a spring of good water may have influenced the siting of the early monastery and subsequent Norman church. There may have been a Medieval well house here (fragments of dressed stone have been found close by) but the well in its present form is probably C19th. Such a powerful spring must have attracted attention in pre-Christian times & its waters are still used for baptisms in the church.
