Coast Guardsman at First American Flag on Okinawa. Coast Guard Combat Photographer John Papsun, of Birmingham, Mich., stands by the first American flag to be raised on Okinawa, Jap island less than 330 miles from the Nips' homelands. The flag, donated by the crew of a Coast Guard-manned LST, was planted by Marines and Coast Guardsmen on a height overlooking the ocean which can be seen from both sides of this narrow island.
