Butlittle is known of his mateThal grandparents ex-cept that they were lifelong residents of Dunmore,Ireland, and were Protestants in religious paternal grandparents were Elihu and Susan(Terhune) Ayres, the grandfather a native ofSouthampton, England, whence, in 1780, he cameto \merica with a brother. After a year spent inNew Bedford they separated, the former going toBergen county, X. J., the latter to Pennsylvania,where he died shortly afterward. For many yearsMr. Ayres grandfather operated the first cableferry between Manhattan Island and Jersey City,X. J. He died in 1825, at the age of sixty-eight.
