William Hobson and the men of the McClintock Artic Expedition finding the cairn with the 'Victory Point' note, Back Bay, King William Island, May 1859. The letters inside the cairn gave details of Captain Sir John Franklin's lost expedition of 1845. Sir John Franklin's (1786-1847), expedition left England in 1845 aboard two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, and was assigned to traverse the last unnavigated sections of the Northwest Passage. The expedition met with disaster after both ships and their crews became icebound in Victoria Strait near King William Island.
