Fleet Air Arm Chance-Vought Corsair fighters, with Fairey Barracuda torpedo bombers behind, ranged on the flight deck of HMS Formidable off Norway. The American Vought F4U Corsair was designed and operated as a carrier-based fighter aircraft, that saw service in World War II. In Royal Navy service, it was given the designation "Corsair [Mark] I". Because of the limited hangar deck height in several classes of British carrier, many Corsairs had their outer wings "clipped" by 8 inches to clear the deckhead.
