France, Puivert Castle, The Chateau de Puivert- Cathar castle, ruins of the castle
The current ruins at Puivert Castle date from the 14th century and are still in relatively good condition. With its 35 metre high keep and 6 towers incorporated in its enclosure wall, this castle dominates the former glacial plain of Puivert below. One of the rooms in the keep has very nice carvings of 8 characters with medieval musical instruments on its walls. A meeting of troubadours took place here in 1170, and in 1185 at festivities attended by the Viscount of Carcassonne and Loba, Lady of Cabaret. At the time of the Albisigean Crusade the castle’s seigneur was Bernard de Congost. His wife Alpais had become a Cathar Parfaite before her death in 1208.
