MacRAE, ALFRED REGINALD: Assistant Commissioner of Police; son of Donald MacRae, stationmaster; bornInverness, 26 January 1888. Educated at Aber-deen Grammar School. On leaving the Univer-sity where he studied from 1905-08, he tookthe highest place in the examination for theIndian Police Service. Most of his time inIndia was spent in Delhi, where he had thechance of doing good service ati the time of the 32 IN Durbar; while later he became an officer ofthe new Delhi Province. There he acted untilApril 1915, gaining areputation among hissuperiors as one of themost promising officersof the Punjab Police. In April 1915 be-gan his more definitewar-service. He wassent to Mesopotamiaas Assistant Commis-sioner of Police underthe Foreign and Politi-cal Department of theGovernment of he had the difficult and important dutyof organizing a new police force, and this wasa piece of work which made demands uponall the skill in dealing with men, which had alwayscharacterized him. On 1 July 1916 he died ofcholera near Nasiriyeh. He was one of themany who gave their lives for their countrywhose name appeared in no casualty list.
